Who is Anthony B. Susan?

Nobody, really. The name is drawn from It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, where it is the pen name of the indomitable Lorinda Pike. Under that name, Pike publishes pamphlets protesting the rise of a fascist state in America.

The meteoric growth of the Tea Party and the stranglehold the religious right maintains on so much of the country makes It Can’t Happen Here more relevant than ever.

Here’s a link to the Gutenberg copy: http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/0301001h.html

The headline’s from Main Street, also by Sinclair Lewis. No,  I did not major in English. Yes, I am probably too pretentious for my own good.

  1. I’m not sure I would describe the Tea Party (nor the religious right) as having a “stranglehold” on the country. Though, it is a most unfortunate trend that the masses are easily manipulated.

Oh Kierkegaard, how right you were – “Truth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stronger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion — and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion… while truth again reverts to a new minority.”

    Good luck with the blog.
